The clocks have been turned back and the days are getting a little shorter, but with plenty of good Aussie sunshine still to be found, there’s no better time to get those Maxxis tyres rolling on a well-deserved weekend away to NSW’s “Snowies”!
From Canberra it’s a leisurely ride (about three hours or less) with some pretty awesome scenery into the bargain. While in winter it’s all about the snow, the great thing is that at this time of year you don’t have to be an avid skier to enjoy the slopes, fresh mountain air and everything else this wonderful spot has to offer. So, if you’re looking for some inspiration for a mini pre-winter getaway before the snow seriously sets in on the ground – check your vehicle (don’t forget to those tyre pressures including the spare), load your mountain bike and let’s get on our way!
A few directions to get you started
From the centre of Canberra, make your way on to the Monaro Highway/B23 towards Jindabyne and follow the signs, before making the final climb on Kosciuszko Rd…Easy as!
The all-important questions of vehicle and tyres
Things don’t get more postcard picture-perfect than the Snowies high country (with or without snow!) – and in a 4WD with a set of Maxxis RAZR All-Terrains (AT811s), you’ll make the trip in outstanding comfort with all the grip and cornering you need for winding mountain roads in any weather. If you’re going before the winter months, there’s no need for snow chains, however keep in mind that from June to October it’s mandatory for 2WD vehicles to carry snow chains on certain roads in the Kosciuszko National Park.
Where to go and what to do
Start at Jindabyne…
Just half an hour from Thredbo and Perisher, Jindabyne (on Lake Jindabyne) is the gateway to many Snowy Mountain activities, both in and out of snow season. In autumn it’s the perfect place for some kayaking, boating and trying your hand at some fly fishing (for which this area is renowned). Or, take a tour of the Gaden Trout Hatchery before settling in for a picnic on the banks of Thredbo River.
Hike to Australia’s highest peak…
Enjoy the spectacular panorama views from the Kosciuszko Express chairlift as it takes you to the start of the 13km walk from Thredbo to the summit of Mt Kosciuszko. One of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences that will quite literally have you feeling on top of the world!
Bike the Thredbo River Track…
With rides for every level of mountain bike enthusiast (including guided options) – this is a great way to get to know the magnificent Kosciuszko National Park at your own pace.
Explore the Yarrangobilly Caves…
Complete with a river walk and natural thermal pool where you can take a dip (it’s 270C all year round!), the magnificent limestone Yarrangobilly Caves are a highlight of any Kosciuszko National Park adventure. Book ahead for a tour and to get your cave pass.
If sipping a glass of local wine, gin, schnapps or other locally produced brew (all with a sensational mountain view) is your idea of absolute weekend relaxation – the Snowies and its surrounds will leave you spoilt for choice.
Where to stay…
Whether you set up camp with the stunning Snowies as your backdrop at Geehi Flats, stay in style at The Man from Snowy River Hotel at Perisher, or book a cosy cottage in Jindabyne – when it comes to accommodation, the Snowies has something to suit everyone. Even out of snow season it can be busy – so it’s recommended to book ahead.
Anything else you need to know?
Like every time you hit the road, a trip to the stunning Snowy Mountains is one that you want to enjoy knowing that your tyres are excellent quality, safe and absolutely up for the journey at hand. With a good set of Maxxis tyres (that are treated right and checked regularly of course), you’ll have this important point perfectly covered. If you’re not already registered for Maxcoverage warranty – speak to your Maxxis dealer about getting onboard when you make your next tyre purchase. It’ll give you extra peace of mind, wherever you are on the road.
