Getting to grips with everything from beach runs and
rocky hill climbs to thick mud holes, is all part of the territory for this month’s
Maxxis Man Off-road Showcase contributor, who has seen his RAZRS quite
literally move mountains!
Fitted to his 2017 Navara NP300m, the 285/75/16 RAZRs are the tyre of choice for
off-roader Chris Wilson, after a recommendation by his local tyre store in
Bega. He says they’ve gone the distance right up and down the NSW South Coast
exploring some of the most stunning spots from the Deua national park and Bendethera
through the punishing Alpine National Park — and are still wearing
tremendously well.
“I couldn’t be happier with them – they’ve done around 32,000km so far and have hardly worn! I’ve put them through their paces through a variety of terrains and they’ve never let me down. The aggressive sidewall and tread pattern is by far my favourite design combination yet. Plus – the best thing about the RAZRs is they’re not noisy on the highway!”
With big plans to take on Cape York and the High Country
in 2020 (in addition to exploring every inch of his own NSW South coast
backyard!) — Chris’s rig has a range of custom mods ready to take on many
different terrains.
“I decided to build a custom tray and canopy with
the help of my grandfather – and we spent a lot of time and effort to come up
with a design to suit my needs. From a spare wheel and jerry can holder to
rooftop tent mounts and many internal features I reckon we nailed it!
I went with a shorty set up with the dimensions ending up being 1530mm in
length and 1760mm in width. This tray has a very good departure angle and has
plenty of clearance,” Chris says.
Inside the canopy he also has a MSA60 fridge drop-slide
and a King Single 900mm drawer next to the fridge which Chris says “fits neat”.
Other modifications (so far!) to the vehicle
include:
- An Ironman bullbar
(modified for body lift) - 2 9” spotties and 20” light
bar - Gme 6.6 dbi aeriel with a Undien
uhf - Kings Dominat8r 12,000
winch - Custom rock sliders
(homemade!) - A PSR 4” Bilstein
suspension kit and 2” body lift (vehicle is set to 5” and all engineered!) - Constant Kings 4” heavy heavy-duty
rear springs - Rhino roof racks
- Kings rooftop tent and
awning, and last but not least, - A welded-in chassis brace.
There’s plenty more Chris is looking to add to his Navara before hitting the road to Cape York very soon (along with his trusty RAZRs!) for a full month of fishing, camping and exploring the tip.
